Even the walls appear to bleed.
Shades of bloody red and healing pink
Paint await the brush of restoration.
Forgetfulness fades at the walls of the Citadel.

Winged creatures profiled in sky-blue
Absorb a painter’s delicate stroke, himself no priest,
Yet his priestly attention to feather and plume
Promotes a social and political stance.

Forgiveness fades at the walls of the Citadel.
Hopefulness guides intent to rebuild
Homes, shrines, temples and gardens.

Promises of renewal, by a generation
Of painters too young to recall
Ruined walls splashed with blood at the Citadel.

Thousands died in the Battle of Hue.
A generation of souls on opposite sides of Earth
Weep and ache in shame and dismay
More than forty years after Hell visited the Citadel.

Lớp sơn mới chờ cọ lông tái tạo
Sự lãng quên nhoà nhạt chốn cổ thành

Nhiều sinh vật nhắm trời xanh bay bổng
Tinh tế truyền thần dưới nét bút hoạ sư
Đã tô vẽ từng chiếc lông thận trọng
Thể hiện lập trường xã hội, suy tư

Lòng tha thứ nhạt mờ nơi thành cổ
Hy vọng được chú tâm dẫn dắt phục hồi
Nhà cửa, vườn tược, miếu đền, thiền tự

Hứa hẹn sự tái tạo từ một thế hệ
Hoạ sĩ còn quá trẻ để nhớ
Cảnh tường thành bị tắm máu, sụp đổ

Hàng ngàn người chết trong chiến trận Huế
Linh hồn của một thế hệ đối nghịch bắc nam
Đau khổ, khóc than trong hận thù và xấu hổ
Hơn bốn mươi năm trước lúc quỷ sứ viếng thăm
